Are you a newbie to hiking and exploring nature? If so, then this blog post is for you!
We've compiled a list of 11 essential hiking gear items that every woman should have in her arsenal. These items will not only make your outdoor adventures more enjoyable but also ensure your safety and comfort.
So, grab your favorite trail mix, put on your best hiking socks, and let’s dive into the must-have gear for women who love to hike!
1. Sturdy Backpack
A good backpack is essential for carrying all your gear. Look for one that is lightweight, has multiple compartments, and is comfortable to wear for long periods. Remember, you’re not just packing snacks; you’re packing the dreams of conquering mountains AND snacks.
2. Comfortable Hiking Boots
Invest in a pair of high-quality hiking boots or trail runners that provide excellent support and traction. Think of them as the loyal sidekicks in your outdoor adventure saga. Without them, you might end up with blisters that could rival a horror movie plot!
3. Compact Umbrella
Not expecting rain? That’s okay! This one item can be used for multiple things: providing shade, creating a makeshift bathroom stall when nature calls (we’ve all been there), or even as a deterrent to wild animals.
4. Wind-breaker or Jacket
You never know when the weather will change on you. If you get lost, encounter a sudden swarm of bugs, or if the wind picks up like it’s auditioning for a role in a disaster movie, a good jacket will save the day. Plus, it gives you that stylish “I’m ready for anything” look, even if you’re just trying to look less like a human burrito!
5. Water Bottle or Hydration Pack
Staying hydrated is essential while hiking, unless you enjoy the delightful experience of feeling like a dried-up sponge halfway up a trail. Invest in a water bottle that’s easy to carry or a hands-free hydration pack. Look for one that can hold enough water for your trip or can be refilled at water sources along the trail.
6. Durable Hiking Pole
A hiking pole can provide stability and support, especially on steep and uneven terrain. Look for one that is adjustable and lightweight. It’s like having a personal trainer with you, except this one won’t yell at you when you take a snack break!
7. Compact and Versatile Multi-Tool
A multi-tool is a handy item to have in your backpack. It can be used for various tasks such as cutting open food packaging, opening cans, and fixing gear. You never know when you might need to channel your inner MacGyver.
8. A Hat
Protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays with a brimmed hat, or the cold and wind with a beanie. Look for a hat that provides good coverage and is made from breathable material. Not only will you look fabulous, but you could also pretend you’re a glamorous explorer in a nature documentary (cue Brittish accent).
9. High-Quality Headlamp, Lantern, or Flashlight
A good light is essential for night hikes or when setting up camp in the dark. Even if you hike during daylight hours, it would be helpful to have one if you lose track of time and the sun starts setting before you get back to the trail head. Think about the type of lighting device that would work best for you - rechargeable, hands-free, fits in a pocket, or features a wrist strap.
Look for a light that is lightweight, has a long battery life, and provides a bright beam, because stumbling around in the dark is only fun until you trip over a rock!
10. Detailed Trail Map
Always carry a detailed trail map of the area you are hiking in. It will help you navigate and stay on the right path. Trust me, you don’t want to accidentally end up on a “shortcut” that leads to a goat yoga retreat instead of the parking lot!
TIP: An alternative to a physical map is to take a screenshot of a detailed map and directions with your cellphone. Even if you don't have cell service, you can still access your camera and photos.
11. First Aid Kit
You should always have some type of first aid kit with you when hiking, or outdoors in general. Try to bring the things most likely needed for the environment you plan to be in. Make sure to carry enough supplies for yourself, anyone going with you, and extra just in case.
We like to recommend building up your own first aid kit, so you can customize the contents as needed. Store bought first aid kits are basic, can get expensive, and don't usually contain quality items. Check out our downloadable first aid kit checklist - here - Because nothing says “pro adventurer” like being prepared for the unexpected!
Gear up, my intrepid trailblazers, because with these hiking essentials, you’re about to start conquering the wilderness like a caffeinated squirrel on a mission! The great outdoors is practically shouting, “Get out here!”, and you should respond with an enthusiastic, “Hold my protein bar!”
As you embark on your epic journey, just remember to check the weather, pack enough snacks to feed a small army, and inform a friend about your grand escapade. Stay safe, have a blast, and soak in all that glorious nature—happy hiking, fabulous adventurers!
